Size guide and how to measure

Where the size guide lives, what the numbers actually describe, and how to check a piece against something you already own.

Every apparel product page has a Size guide button next to the size selector. It opens the chart for that garment, with a diagram showing exactly where each measurement is taken.

The numbers are the garment, not you

This is the part that trips people up. Our charts are garment measurements, taken with the piece laid flat, in inches. They are not body measurements.

So a chest figure of 22 does not mean a 22 inch chest. Laid flat, you are measuring across one side of the garment, which is roughly half the way around it. Double it for the full circumference, then compare that to a piece you already own.

The fastest way to get it right

Take a garment you already own and like the fit of. Lay it flat, smooth out the wrinkles, and measure it the same way the diagram shows. Then find the closest row in our chart.

That single step beats guessing from a body measurement, because it compares like with like.

What each row means

  • Body length. From the highest point of the shoulder seam straight down to the bottom hem.
  • Chest width, laid flat. Lay the piece flat and measure straight across from one armpit seam to the other.
  • Waist and hip, laid flat, on bottoms. Measured straight across from edge to edge, with the waistband relaxed.
  • Inseam. Along the inner leg seam, from the crotch down to the cuff opening.
  • Tolerance. The row marked tolerance is the acceptable variance on that measurement. Garments are cut and sewn, so a small difference piece to piece is normal and expected.

Inches, and converting to centimetres

The charts are in inches. If you work in centimetres, multiply by 2.54. A 22 inch chest width is about 56 cm laid flat, so about 112 cm around.

One size items

Anything one size, like a cap with an adjustable closure, shows a One size tag instead of a chart. There is no measurement to pick.

Fit notes matter as much as the numbers

Each chart carries a short fit note underneath it. That is where we say whether a piece runs boxy, true to size, or relaxed, and whether to size up if you are between sizes. Read it before you pick, because two garments with the same chest number can wear completely differently.

If the size still turns out wrong

You have 30 days from the day your order arrived to ask for an exchange to a different size. The piece has to be unworn, unwashed and in its original condition with tags attached. You cover sending it back and we cover sending the replacement out.

Use the contact form at shftdco.com/pages/contact to start a size exchange. Your giveaway entries are not affected in any way.
